Big Square from Heat Press

I just heat pressed 2color numbers on the back of jerseys.
The jerseys are 100% polyester, dri wicking mesh, orange and black.
I pressed the jerseys and the usual dark area arises after you remove from the press.
I wasn't worried. But then the square from where the press hits the jersey was still there much later on.
It's still there today. It's on both the orange and the black jersey.
Anybody have this happen? Is it going to go away in the wash? Or did the jersey get a burn?

It sounds like the the fabric may have been damaged, which has happened to me with some wicking jerseys. The fabric was 2 layers and the area under the heat press looked 'mashed' as if the 2 layers were bonded by the press. It did not come out in the wash and they were not wearable due as the pressed area was very noticeable (they were a light blue). I ended up embroidering them.
